Nagoya University participated in the general meeting of UPWARDS (University Partnership for Workforce Advancement and Research & Development in Semiconductors).

UPWARDS is a Japan-U.S. university consortium established to advance human resource development and research in the semiconductor field. On the Japanese side, the consortium brings together Nagoya University, Tohoku University, Institute of Science Tokyo, Hiroshima University, and Kyushu University; on the U.S. side, the University of Washington, Purdue University, Virginia Tech, Boise State University, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute — eleven universities in total. Micron and Tokyo Electron participate as industry partners, and the consortium has been active since 2023 with a five-year term running through 2027.

The meeting was one of two general meetings held annually, and took place at RIT in New York State. Nagoya University leads two pillars within the consortium: Pillar 4 (Semiconductor & Memory Centric Research) and Pillar 5 (Student & Faculty Exchanges).

The next general meeting is scheduled to be held at Tohoku University in November 2026, and Nagoya University is also exploring the possibility of hosting a future general meeting as early as autumn 2027.
