A delegation from the Forest Tree Breeding Center of the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute (FFPRI), Japan, visited the NC State College of Natural Resources for a three-day exchange. During the visit, they engaged in active discussions with researchers from the NC State Tree Improvement Cooperative, focusing on the breeding of pine and sugi (Japanese cedar).

The visit highlighted differences in breeding strategies and long-term approaches between Japan and the United States, particularly the scale of breeding programs. Touring NC State’s research plantations underscored the strengths of Japan’s highly efficient breeding programs, which have achieved significant advances despite limited land and personnel. At the same time, the U.S. approach, supported by long-term investment and large-scale field operations, offered valuable perspectives for future collaboration.

Beyond scientific discussions, the visit strengthened relationships between researchers working toward shared goals in sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation.
